About this game

Pull up a chair in an evening tea house above the harbour. Jade Lantern is classic Hong Kong mahjong against three computer players, played on a lacquered red-and-gold table under swaying lanterns. All 144 chunky ivory-and-jade tiles are there: dots, bamboo, characters, winds, dragons, flowers and seasons. The tiles are shuffled with a clatter, built into walls, the dice are rolled and the wall is broken before the deal.

Draw and discard, and claim discards for Chow, Pung, Kong or the win when the buttons pop up. Claims follow the proper priority, kongs bring a replacement tile, flowers and seasons are revealed and replaced, and an added kong can be robbed. Win with four sets and a pair, or go for the specials: Seven Pairs and Thirteen Orphans.

Every win ends with a clear faan breakdown (self-drawn, concealed hand, all chows, all pungs, half and full flush, dragon pungs, seat and prevailing winds, flowers and more) and the payments. The dealer and the prevailing wind rotate as you play. Choose a quick game of the East round or a full game of all four winds, and set the opponents from Gentle to Shark.

New to mahjong? Turn on the assists: jade bars under tiles that already form sets, a panel showing exactly which tiles you are waiting on, a gold arrow suggesting a discard, coach tips the first time things happen and a short interactive how-to-play. Play with a finger on your phone in portrait, or with the mouse and keyboard shortcuts on a bigger screen.
